Christ-centered Expository Preaching

In every sermon, we are committed to preach the truth of the Scriptural text in light of:

  1. the theological context of the glorious mystery of the Holy Trinity
  2. the redemptive/covenantal context of the full work our our triune God in Christ
  3. the micro context of the Scripture passage
  4. the macro context of the whole Bible
  5. the historical context of the orthodox Christian theology derived from the whole Bible and expressed in our faithful creeds and catechisms

In a word, we endeavor as Apostle Paul to preach Christ and him crucified (1 Corinthians 1:23).

Reformed Experiential Preaching

Thus, we seek to practice Christ-centered Reformed experiential preaching, defined as follows:

  • Christ-centered: Christ in his person and work as the focal point of the whole Bible and the whole Christian life
  • Orthodox: faithful to the true form of Apostolic doctrine embodied in our creeds (Apostles’ Creed, Nicene Creed, Chalcedonian Definition)
  • Expositional: expounding the truth of Scripture, whether in verse-by-verse preaching through whole books of Scripture, or expounding the truth of a doctrine taught throughout Scripture
  • Reformed: doctrinally and theologically situated within the Reformed Faith
  • Experiential: the whole Christ for the whole man — mind, will, and emotions
  • Preaching: more than a lecture, lesson, or speech — the authoritative proclamation of the truth of God’s Word in faithful exposition and exhortation, bringing God’s living Word home to the heart

Here is a sermon summarizing our commitment to Christ-centered preaching:

Nehemiah Coxe on Christ-centered Preaching

“Remember that the duty of your position is not to preach yourselves but Christ Jesus the Lord. His glory must be the mark aimed at by all your labors, and His grace the principal subject of all your discourses. It is not a philosophic harangue that will save the souls of men, but the preaching of Christ crucified. His Gospel is ‘the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes;’ and his Holy Name is the ointment that perfumes all religious exercises.

Therefore I will not only say, let there be … something of Christ in every sermon, but let Christ be the beginning, middle, and end of your discourses; for in Him are hid ‘all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge;’ in Him is the fountain and head-spring of all true comfort and holiness.
